Perovion DTBP L-B is a pure liquid di-tert-butyl peroxide (DTBP) supplied as a neat peroxide at high active content. As a high-temperature dialkyl peroxide, Perovion DTBP L-B is an efficient initiator for the production of low density polyethylene (LDPE) in autoclave and tubular high-pressure processes, for the peroxide crosslinking of polyethylene in PEX-a pipe and tube applications by the Engel method, and for the (co)polymerization of styrene, acrylates, and methacrylates across a range of elevated processing temperatures. Its clean thermal decomposition to tert-butanol and acetone produces no halide or acidic byproducts, making Perovion DTBP L-B suitable for polymer applications where low residual contamination and minimal impact on polymer color and clarity are required.
Key Features
- Efficient LDPE Production Initiator: Perovion DTBP L-B is an established initiator for the production of low density polyethylene (LDPE) in both tubular and autoclave high-pressure reactor processes. In practice, it is typically used in combination with other peroxides of diverging activity profiles to ensure a broad reactivity temperature range across the reactor, reduce residual monomer in the final polymer, and maximize reactor efficiency across varying production grades and throughput targets.
- PEX-a Crosslinking for Pipes and Tubes: Perovion DTBP L-B is suitable for the peroxide crosslinking of polyethylene in the Engel (PEX-a) process, where DTBP is incorporated into the PE compound and crosslinking is initiated during high-temperature extrusion. PEX-a pipes and tubes produced by this method are used in hot and cold water distribution, radiant floor heating, and industrial fluid transport applications requiring sustained elevated-temperature service and flexible reformability.
- Clean Thermal Decomposition Profile: Di-tert-butyl peroxide decomposes cleanly to tert-butanol and acetone as primary byproducts, with no halide, acid, or aromatic decomposition products. This clean decomposition profile helps preserve the clarity, color stability, and electrical properties of polyethylene and acrylic polymer products, and reduces the risk of process equipment corrosion or product contamination associated with peroxides that generate acidic or halide residuals.
- Styrene and Polystyrene Polymerization Initiator: Perovion DTBP L-B is effective as an initiator for the polymerization and copolymerization of styrene in the temperature range of 95–185°C, used individually or in combination with other peroxides of complementary activity profiles. This application range covers bulk styrene polymerization for PS grades, high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) rubber modification processes, and specialty styrene copolymer production.
- Acrylics and Methacrylate Polymerization Initiator: Perovion DTBP L-B initiates the solution and bulk (co)polymerization of acrylates and methacrylates in the temperature range of 130–175°C, supporting the production of acrylic coating resins, adhesive polymers, and specialty acrylic copolymers. Its high activation temperature enables use in high-temperature solution polymerization processes where low-residual-monomer polymer grades are required for coatings and industrial polymer applications.
Typical Applications
Perovion DTBP L-B is used as a reactor-feed initiator in high-pressure LDPE autoclave and tubular processes, where it is injected as a neat liquid or in solution into the reactor at the appropriate temperature zone. In combination with lower-temperature peroxides, DTBP covers the high-temperature zone of the reactor profile, contributing to molecular weight control, residual monomer reduction, and efficient reactor throughput. For PEX-a applications, the peroxide is compounded into polyethylene prior to extrusion, where the high-temperature Engel crosslinking process activates DTBP in the extruder and die zone to achieve the target gel content required for pressure pipe performance standards.
End-use applications include LDPE film, packaging, wire coating, and extrusion products; PEX-a hot and cold water distribution pipes, radiant floor heating tubing, and industrial process piping requiring elevated-temperature service and thermal reformability; general purpose, crystal, and high-impact polystyrene (HIPS) grades; acrylic and methacrylic coating resins for industrial, automotive, and architectural coatings; and specialty acrylate copolymers for adhesives, sealants, and functional polymer applications requiring controlled molecular weight and low residual monomer content.
