Addressing Gelcoat Wrinkling in Marine Composite Manufacturing

Marine composite manufacturers operate under demanding conditions, particularly in tropical regions where elevated temperatures, humidity, saltwater exposure, and long service cycles can place additional pressure on both production processes and finished components.

One of the practical challenges identified through Innovexar’s work with boat manufacturers is gelcoat wrinkling, a surface defect that can occur when gelcoat condition, laminate resin behavior, curing speed, lamination timing, and ambient temperature are not sufficiently balanced.

To address this issue, Innovexar’s technical team developed Epovion® BPF-L 17 with particular attention to curing behavior, gelcoat compatibility, processing stability, and corrosion resistance.

Epovion® BPF-L 17 in Production: A Maldives Shipyard Case Study

The resin has since been introduced into production at a shipyard in the Maldives. Under actual manufacturing conditions, Epovion® BPF-L 17 has shown stable processing performance and has effectively reduced the occurrence of gelcoat wrinkling, helping improve surface consistency while supporting a more predictable lamination and curing process.

A recent visit to the Maldives shipyard gave the Innovexar team the opportunity to review the product directly in production and exchange feedback with the customer on lamination behavior, curing conditions, and surface quality.

Applications for Fiberglass-Reinforced Marine Structures

Epovion® BPF-L 17 is intended for fiberglass-reinforced structures such as hulls, decks, and other marine composite components exposed to water, salt, humidity, and corrosive environments. Its stable working window and controlled curing behavior also support more consistent processing under the elevated ambient temperatures commonly found in tropical boatbuilding environments.

This application reflects the development approach behind Epovion® BPF-L 17: starting from a real manufacturing challenge, adapting resin performance to the customer’s process, and validating the solution under actual production conditions.

Why Corrosion Resistance Matters in Boatbuilding

Boatbuilders and marine composite fabricators work in some of the most corrosive environments in industrial manufacturing. Constant exposure to saltwater, humidity, and UV radiation places sustained stress on both the laminate structure and the outer gelcoat layer, and even small inconsistencies in resin curing behavior can translate into visible surface defects or reduced service life once a vessel is in the water. For shipyards producing hulls, decks, and other structural composite parts, resin systems that behave predictably across a range of ambient conditions are essential to protecting both production schedules and finished product quality.

This is particularly true in tropical shipbuilding hubs, where high heat and humidity can accelerate curing and make gelcoat compatibility harder to control. Epovion® BPF-L 17 was engineered with this operating environment in mind, giving laminators a wider, more forgiving processing window while still delivering the corrosion resistance marine composite structures require over years of saltwater exposure. Innovexar’s technical team continues to work directly with boatyards to validate resin performance under real production conditions rather than laboratory conditions alone, an approach reflected in the Maldives shipyard case described above.
