Perovion TAEH L12-80

Difunctional liquid peroxide initiator for thermoset resin curing and polymer production at elevated temperatures

Perovion TAEH L12-80 is an 80% solution of 1,1-Di(tert-amylperoxy)cyclohexane in isododecane. As a difunctional liquid organic peroxide, Perovion TAEH L12-80 is a highly efficient midrange initiator for curing unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins at elevated temperatures, and also serves as an initiator for the (co)polymerization of styrene, LDPE, acrylonitrile, acrylates, and methacrylates. Its difunctional architecture can reduce polymerization times by up to 10% compared to monofunctional peroxides under equivalent conditions, and the product provides excellent catalyzed shelf-life in BMC and SMC formulations.

Key Features

  • Midrange Initiator for Thermoset Resin Curing: Perovion TAEH L12-80 is a highly efficient initiator for curing unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resins at elevated temperatures. Its midrange activity profile makes it well-suited for hot-press molding, SMC, BMC, prepreg, RTM, and pultrusion processes where controlled, consistent gel times and through-cure at processing temperatures are required across a range of resin formulations and part geometries.
  • Difunctional Peroxide for Faster Polymerization: As a difunctional peroxide, 1,1-Di(tert-amylperoxy)cyclohexane provides two active radical sites per molecule upon thermal decomposition. Under equivalent reaction conditions, this can reduce polymerization times by up to 10% compared to monofunctional peroxides of equivalent activity, offering potential improvements in cycle time and throughput for polymer production and thermoset composite manufacturing operations.
  • Excellent BMC and SMC Catalyzed Shelf-Life: Perovion TAEH L12-80 provides excellent catalyzed shelf-life in bulk molding compound (BMC) and sheet molding compound (SMC) formulations, supporting stable compound storage and consistent processing behavior from mixing through molding. This characteristic is important for managing compound inventory and ensuring reproducible cure performance across extended production campaigns.
  • Broad Polymer Production Initiator Range: In addition to thermoset composite curing, Perovion TAEH L12-80 is an effective initiator for the (co)polymerization of styrene and polystyrene grades, LDPE production, and solution or bulk polymerization of acrylonitrile, acrylates, and methacrylates. This application range makes the product useful across multiple polymer production processes within a single manufacturing site.
  • 80% Active Content in Isododecane Solution: Perovion TAEH L12-80 is supplied as a liquid solution at 80% active content in isododecane, a low-viscosity paraffinic solvent compatible with most resin systems and polymer processing environments. The solution form facilitates accurate metering and blending in resin dispensing and injection systems used across thermoset composite manufacturing lines.

Typical Applications

Perovion TAEH L12-80 is applied as a curing initiator in unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resin systems processed at elevated temperatures. It is well-suited to hot-press SMC and BMC molding for automotive body panels, structural parts, and electrical enclosures; pultrusion of glass fiber-reinforced profiles for construction and industrial infrastructure; resin transfer molding (RTM) and infusion processes for composite structures; and prepreg manufacture for thermoset laminate applications. The difunctional activity and midrange half-life profile support consistent cure at temperatures typical for these processes.

In polymer production, Perovion TAEH L12-80 serves as an initiator for high-pressure LDPE tubular and autoclave reactors, styrene homopolymerization and copolymer production, and solution or bulk polymerization of acrylonitrile, acrylate, and methacrylate monomers for coatings, adhesives, and specialty polymer applications. End-use articles include glass fiber-reinforced composite panels and profiles, thermosetting structural parts, LDPE film and packaging, and acrylic-based coating resins.

Perovion TAEH L12-80: Safety & Handling

Perovion TAEH L12-80 should be handled in accordance with applicable safety procedures for organic peroxides. Users are advised to review the Safety Data Sheet prior to handling and to implement appropriate personal protective equipment and engineering controls as specified therein.

Safety Data Sheet and destination-compliant labeling information are available upon request. For related products, see also Perovion MEKP-CHP L28R and Perovion AAP-TBPB L27.

Difunctional Reactivity and Dosing Considerations

The two peroxide bonds in Perovion TAEH L12-80 decompose independently at similar rates, so the initiator behaves close to two monofunctional radical sources per molecule once the cure temperature is reached. In practice this means formulators can often achieve the same cure speed at a lower molar dosing level than a monofunctional peroxide of comparable activity, which is the basis for the up to 10% cycle-time reduction reported for equivalent reaction conditions. This efficiency is most noticeable in thick-section SMC and BMC parts, where faster core cure reduces the gap between surface and core cure states.

Because Perovion TAEH L12-80 is supplied pre-diluted at 80% active content in isododecane, it can be metered directly into resin paste without additional dilution, simplifying dosing calculations relative to solid or higher-concentration peroxide formats. For formulators curing similar SMC and BMC systems who need a monofunctional midrange perester alternative, Perovion TBPIN L42 offers comparable elevated-temperature cure activity in a single-peroxide-bond liquid format.
