Perovion MEKP-CHP L28R

Vanishing-red peroxide for visible ambient curing

Perovion MEKP-CHP L28R is a liquid organic peroxide blend of methyl ethyl ketone peroxide (MEKP) and cumene hydroperoxide (CHP), formulated with a vanishing red (VR) color indicator for curing unsaturated polyester and vinyl ester resin systems at ambient temperature with a metal salt accelerator. Perovion MEKP-CHP L28R gives fabricators a simple visual cue during mixing and cure, without leaving any residual color in the finished laminate or casting.

Perovion MEKP-CHP L28R Overview

This grade combines the fast, reliable ambient initiation of MEKP with the moderating effect of CHP, giving a broader processing window than a single-component MEKP hardener, while retaining dosing levels and gel-time behavior familiar to fabricators already using standard MEKP systems.

The built-in red dye is fully miscible with the peroxide blend: it appears as soon as the hardener is dispersed through the resin, confirming that mixing is complete, and it fades progressively as the cure reaction proceeds, giving operators a visual signal of cure progress without any lab equipment.

This kind of built-in visual feedback is especially useful in shops that run multiple molds simultaneously, since operators can scan a row of parts and immediately identify any that were mixed incorrectly or are lagging behind in cure.

Because the indicator system is self-contained in the peroxide, no separate dye or tracer needs to be dosed into the resin, simplifying quality control on the shop floor and helping catch under-mixed or under-cured regions in a mold before the part is demolded, which is especially valuable on complex geometries where full visual access during lay-up is limited. This can reduce scrap rates and rework, since a visibly under-mixed area can be flagged and corrected before it becomes a warranty issue in the field.

Key Features

  • Blended MEKP/CHP peroxide system for polyester and vinyl ester curing.
  • Vanishing red indicator confirms mixing and monitors cure progress.
  • Red color fades completely, leaving a colorless finished part.
  • Ambient cure with cobalt or other metal accelerators.
  • Helps identify under-cured areas visually before demolding.

Typical Applications

Perovion MEKP-CHP L28R is well suited to hand lay-up and spray-up laminating, gel coat curing, and open-mold casting where visual confirmation of mixing quality matters, such as marine, tank, and pipe fabrication, where large surface areas make consistent mixing harder to verify by touch or smell alone. The vanishing red system is particularly valued in large or complex molds, where inconsistent mixing can otherwise go unnoticed until a part fails inspection.

Quality control teams also use the fading red color as a quick visual cure check across a production run, reducing reliance on destructive testing or extended cure-time buffers, which can shorten mold cycle times in repetitive production. Over a full shift, even small reductions in unnecessary dwell time can add up to a meaningful gain in mold throughput.

Fabricators producing large marine hulls, water tanks, or pipe sections benefit from being able to see at a glance whether hardener has been evenly distributed across a large laminate area before the part is closed up or post-cured. This visual check can be performed by any operator on the line without special training, which helps maintain consistent quality across shifts and between different crew members.

Thermal Stability

Like all organic peroxides, this product decomposes faster as temperature rises, and the vanishing red dye does not affect its underlying thermal sensitivity. Storage above the recommended temperature range accelerates decomposition, shortens shelf life, and in extreme cases can trigger self-accelerating decomposition. Refrigerated storage is recommended to preserve peroxide activity and keep the indicator and cure performance consistent batch to batch. First-in, first-out stock rotation is good practice, and containers should be dated on receipt.

Storage Recommendations

Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight, open flame, and ignition sources. Keep containers tightly closed and segregated from accelerators, reducing agents, acids, bases, and other incompatible materials. Avoid direct contact with copper, brass, or other metals that can catalyze decomposition, and keep secondary containment and appropriate fire suppression equipment on hand wherever this product is stored in volume. Spill response materials suitable for peroxide releases should also be readily accessible near storage and dispensing areas, and staff should be trained on the correct procedure before handling the product unsupervised.

Packaging & Transport

This product is classified as an organic peroxide, Type D, liquid, Division 5.2 (UN 3105) for transport purposes. It is typically supplied in 30 kg HDPE containers designed for peroxide packaging, with other pack sizes available on request to suit different production volumes and site storage capacity. Shipments must follow applicable dangerous goods regulations for organic peroxides, including temperature-controlled transport where specified by shipping lane, season, and transit duration.

Perovion MEKP-CHP L28R: Safety & Handling

As with all organic peroxides, appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves, eye protection, and protective clothing, should be worn when handling this product. Avoid contact with skin and eyes, and use only in well-ventilated areas. Never return unused product to its original container, and always keep it segregated from accelerators, reducing agents, and other incompatible chemicals to prevent violent decomposition.

Fabricators evaluating this grade may also be interested in Perovion MEKP L50R for a single-component red-indicator MEKP, or Perovion MEKP-CHP L24 for a colorless, lower-exotherm MEKP/CHP blend. Full handling guidance, including exposure limits and first-aid measures, is available in the product’s safety data sheet upon request, and should be reviewed by all personnel before first use at a new site.
