Addivion RA WL

Waterborne, low-odor, non-flammable fluoropolymer mold release agent for composite manufacturing in VOC-restricted and flammability-controlled environments

Addivion RA WL is a waterborne, low-odor semi-permanent mold release agent based on fluoropolymer technology, formulated with water as the carrier medium for composite manufacturing and industrial molding applications. Unlike solvent-based fluoropolymer release agents, Addivion RA WL eliminates flammable organic solvents from the mold release process, making it suitable for facilities with strict flammability regulations, restricted-area permits, or indoor composite production environments where VOC emissions must be minimized. Applied as a thin wipe-on or spray coating, Addivion RA WL deposits a dry fluoropolymer release film on mold surfaces that provides multiple part releases per application cycle without silicone contamination or chromate hazards. Addivion RA WL is used in aerospace composite tooling, fiberglass reinforced plastic manufacturing, wind energy blade production, automotive composite component fabrication, and marine composite tooling.

Addivion RA WL Overview

Addivion RA WL is a water-carried fluoropolymer mold release agent developed to provide effective semi-permanent composite release without the flammability and VOC concerns associated with heptane- or isopropanol-based solvent systems. The product is applied by wiping onto a clean, dry mold surface with a lint-free applicator cloth, or by spray application, allowing the water carrier to evaporate and deposit a uniform fluoropolymer film. The resulting film provides a low surface energy barrier that prevents adhesion between the cured composite part and the tool surface. As with solvent-based fluoropolymer release systems, initial mold preparation with Addivion RA WL requires multiple sealing coats to build up an effective release layer; once seasoned, a single maintenance coat restores release performance between production cycles. Addivion RA WL is compatible with epoxy, polyester, vinyl ester, and phenolic thermoset resin systems and can be used on aluminum, steel, and composite mold tool surfaces.

Key Features

  • Waterborne, Non-Flammable Formulation: Addivion RA WL uses water as its carrier medium, eliminating the flammable organic solvent carriers found in heptane-based or isopropanol-based release agents. This makes the product non-flammable and substantially reduces VOC emissions during application, enabling its use in production environments subject to strict fire prevention codes, limited ventilation infrastructure, or regional regulations restricting the use of flammable or high-VOC industrial chemicals. The water carrier also reduces the need for specialized flammable liquid storage and handling equipment.
  • Low-Odor Application: The absence of organic solvent carriers significantly reduces the odor generated during application compared to solvent-based fluoropolymer release agents. Low-odor characteristics are important in enclosed or partially enclosed composite manufacturing facilities, cleanroom-adjacent production areas, and work environments where worker comfort and air quality are operational priorities. Addivion RA WL can be applied in lower-ventilation settings where solvent-based release agents would require enhanced fume extraction.
  • Semi-Permanent Fluoropolymer Release Film: Addivion RA WL deposits a durable fluoropolymer coating that provides semi-permanent release performance across multiple production cycles. After an initial mold seasoning sequence, the fluoropolymer film supports repeated part releases before a maintenance coat is required. This multi-release capability reduces mold preparation frequency and contributes to overall production efficiency compared to single-use wax or film release systems. The release film is compatible with elevated cure temperatures encountered in oven-cure and autoclave composite processing.
  • Non-Silicone, Non-Chromate Chemistry: Addivion RA WL contains no silicone compounds and no hexavalent chromium. The absence of silicone eliminates contamination risk on part surfaces, supporting the integrity of downstream secondary bonding, painting, and surface treatment operations. The non-chromate formulation addresses occupational health concerns and regulatory restrictions on chromate-containing release agents in aerospace and industrial manufacturing environments.
  • Broad Resin and Tool Compatibility: Addivion RA WL is compatible with epoxy, unsaturated polyester, vinyl ester, and phenolic thermoset matrix resin systems, covering both ambient-temperature cure and elevated-temperature cure processes. It is applicable to hand layup, resin transfer molding, vacuum infusion, and oven-cure manufacturing methods. Compatible mold tool materials include aluminum, carbon steel, and composite tooling surfaces, enabling the product to serve diverse tooling inventories in composite manufacturing facilities.

Typical Applications

Addivion RA WL is used in composite manufacturing operations where flammability restrictions, VOC limits, or low-odor requirements make solvent-based release agents impractical or non-compliant. In aerospace composite production facilities subject to strict indoor air quality and fire prevention standards, Addivion RA WL enables fluoropolymer semi-permanent release performance without the fire hazard associated with heptane-based FREKOTE NC alternatives. Carbon fiber and glass fiber reinforced polymer mold tools used for structural and interior aerospace components can be treated with Addivion RA WL as part of a compliant release agent system that meets both production performance and environmental health and safety requirements. In wind energy blade manufacturing, the product can be used in facilities where enclosed or semi-enclosed large-format mold environments make adequate solvent vapor extraction difficult, allowing blade root molds, skin molds, and spar cap molds to be prepared safely.

Addivion RA WL is also applicable in automotive composite tooling facilities where environmental regulations restrict VOC emissions from manufacturing operations, including compression molding and RTM operations for body panels, structural brackets, and underbody components. In marine composite manufacturing, facilities operating in enclosed shipyard buildings or temperature-controlled molding halls can use Addivion RA WL on hull, deck, and superstructure molds without the ventilation requirements of solvent-based release systems. Industrial composite applications such as pipe winding, pressure vessel fabrication, and architectural composite panel production benefit from the low-odor and non-flammable characteristics where worker comfort and indoor air quality standards are key operational constraints. Addivion RA WL also serves educational institutions, research facilities, and prototype composite workshops where simplified solvent management and reduced fire risk are practical operational advantages.

Addivion RA WL: Safety & Handling

Addivion RA WL should be handled in accordance with applicable safety procedures for waterborne industrial coating products. The water-based carrier eliminates the flammability hazards associated with organic solvent-based release agents, significantly reducing fire and explosion risk during application and storage. Standard personal protective equipment — including chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection — should be worn during application as specified in the Safety Data Sheet. Avoid prolonged skin contact. The product is not classified as a flammable liquid and does not require the special ventilation, bonding, or grounding precautions needed for solvent-based mold release agents, making it more practical for use in enclosed facilities and mixed-use production environments. Addivion RA WL should be kept from freezing, as freeze-thaw cycles may affect product stability and application performance.

Dispose of waste product and containers in accordance with local regulations for waterborne industrial chemical waste. In case of skin or eye contact, rinse with water.
