Amivion DMP-30

Tertiary amine epoxy accelerator (CAS 90-72-2) for epoxy-anhydride and epoxy-amine systems in transformer impregnation, electronic potting, casting, and structural adhesive applications.

Amivion DMP-30 is 2,4,6-tris(dimethylaminomethyl)phenol (CAS 90-72-2), a tertiary amine accelerator widely used in epoxy resin systems. DMP-30 acts as a Lewis base catalyst, accelerating the ring-opening reaction of epoxide groups with anhydride hardeners, amine curing agents, or directly with hydroxyl groups in epoxy homopolymerization. At typical use concentrations of 0.5 to 5 parts per hundred resin (phr), Amivion DMP-30 significantly reduces cure time and lowers the cure temperature required to achieve full network development in epoxy-anhydride and epoxy-amine systems. Its combination of effective catalytic activity, good compatibility with common epoxy formulations, and commercial availability makes it the standard reference accelerator in epoxy-anhydride casting, impregnation, and potting systems for electrical, electronic, and structural applications.

Key Features

  • Effective Tertiary Amine Acceleration: Amivion DMP-30 provides strong catalytic acceleration of epoxy-anhydride and epoxy-amine curing reactions through its three tertiary amine groups, which initiate and propagate the ring-opening cross-linking reaction without being consumed in the process. The trifunctional structure delivers high catalytic activity per gram, allowing effective acceleration at low addition levels (typically 1–3 phr) and avoiding unnecessary dilution of the epoxy network.
  • Compatibility with Epoxy-Anhydride Systems: Amivion DMP-30 is the standard accelerator used in combination with anhydride curing agents such as MTHPA (Amivion METHPA) and MHHPA (Amivion ANH-MHHPA). In these systems, DMP-30 initiates anhydride ring opening and accelerates the alternating copolymerization of anhydride and epoxide, enabling cure at lower temperatures or within shorter cycle times. This reduces energy consumption and production cycle time in transformer impregnation, electronic potting, and casting operations.
  • Adjustable Cure Schedule: The amount of Amivion DMP-30 incorporated into an epoxy formulation allows control over the pot life and cure rate of the system. Lower DMP-30 loading extends pot life and working time, while higher loading accelerates gel and cure. This adjustability supports optimization of processing conditions for specific applications — from long-pot-life vacuum impregnation systems to fast-curing repair compounds — without requiring a change in the primary curing agent.
  • Low Addition Level: Effective acceleration is typically achieved at DMP-30 concentrations of 0.5 to 5 phr relative to the epoxy resin, leaving the majority of the formulation volume available for epoxy resin, curing agent, and functional fillers. The low required addition level minimizes the impact of DMP-30 on other system properties such as viscosity, electrical performance, and thermal stability compared to high-loading reactive diluents or co-curing agents.
  • Broad Formulation Compatibility: Amivion DMP-30 is compatible with a wide range of standard epoxy resins including bisphenol A, bisphenol F, and cycloaliphatic epoxy types, and with common anhydride and polyamine curing agents. This broad compatibility makes it a versatile accelerator for development and production across diverse epoxy formulation platforms in electrical, electronic, adhesive, and coating applications.

Typical Applications

Amivion DMP-30 is used as a cure accelerator in two-component epoxy-anhydride and epoxy-amine formulations across electrical, electronic, and structural applications. In transformer and motor winding impregnation, DMP-30 is added to MTHPA- or MHHPA-based impregnation resins to control gel time and cure schedule during vacuum pressure impregnation (VPI) operations. In electronic component potting and encapsulation, DMP-30 enables cure at moderate oven temperatures within practical production cycle times while maintaining the low initial viscosity needed for void-free filling. In structural adhesive and casting formulations, DMP-30 accelerates cure to allow earlier demold and handling.

Additional applications include use as an accelerator in epoxy grouts and repair mortars for civil engineering; in UV-curable epoxy hybrid systems where amine acceleration supports shadow-cure in areas not reached by UV radiation; as a co-catalyst in latent epoxy curing systems based on dicyandiamide or other slow-reacting hardeners; and in epoxy coating formulations where rapid ambient cure is required. At higher concentrations, DMP-30 can also function as a catalytic curing agent for epoxy resins, enabling formulation of one-component fast-cure systems in specific adhesive and coating applications.
