Amivion PAM-651

Low-viscosity polyamide 651 resin epoxy curing agent for ambient-temperature cure in protective coatings, maintenance painting, marine systems, and adhesive applications.

Amivion PAM-651 is a low-viscosity polyamide resin epoxy curing agent produced by the condensation of dimer fatty acids with polyethylenepolyamines. As a member of the polyamide 651 family, Amivion PAM-651 is characterized by its relatively low viscosity compared to higher molecular weight polyamide grades, facilitating easier mixing and application in solvent-borne and high-solids two-component epoxy systems. The dimer fatty acid backbone imparts the characteristic polyamide curing agent properties of film flexibility, good adhesion to a wide range of substrates, and reduced tendency for amine blush under humid cure conditions. Amivion PAM-651 cures standard bisphenol A and bisphenol F epoxy resins at ambient temperatures and is widely used in protective coatings, maintenance painting, adhesives, and general-purpose epoxy applications where ease of processing and reliable ambient cure performance are required.

Key Features

  • Low Viscosity for Easy Processing: Amivion PAM-651 has a lower viscosity than many higher molecular weight polyamide curing agents, enabling easier weighing, mixing, and application in both manual and automated dispensing operations. Reduced viscosity also improves compatibility with low-viscosity epoxy resins and reactive diluents in the formulation of solvent-free or high-solids two-component systems.
  • Flexible Cured Films: The dimer fatty acid segments in the Amivion PAM-651 polymer backbone introduce chain mobility into the cured epoxy network, producing films with good elongation and resistance to impact and cracking. This flexibility is valuable in coating applications where the substrate is subject to vibration, thermal cycling, or minor structural movement during service.
  • Good Adhesion to Diverse Substrates: Amivion PAM-651 provides reliable adhesion to carbon steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, concrete, and wood. The surface-active nature of the polyamide structure supports effective substrate wetting and adhesion development, including on marginally prepared or aged surfaces encountered in maintenance and repair applications.
  • Ambient Temperature Cure with Reduced Blush: Amivion PAM-651 cures epoxy resins effectively at room temperature and exhibits reduced sensitivity to amine blush under humid conditions compared to unmodified aliphatic amines. This combination supports reliable film formation and surface quality in field applications where humidity control and post-cure heating are impractical.
  • Broad Compatibility and Versatility: Amivion PAM-651 is compatible with standard bisphenol A and bisphenol F epoxy resins and may be blended with other polyamide or amine adduct curing agents to adjust pot life, flexibility, and cure rate. This versatility allows formulators to use Amivion PAM-651 as the primary hardener across a range of coating and adhesive applications without requiring complex formulation systems.

Typical Applications

Amivion PAM-651 is used as the curing agent in two-component epoxy coatings for industrial protection and maintenance. Primary applications include anticorrosion primers and topcoats for structural steel, storage tanks, pipelines, and industrial equipment; epoxy mastic maintenance coatings for marginally prepared steel and concrete surfaces; marine coatings for vessel superstructures and external hull areas; and general-purpose industrial floor coatings for facilities requiring chemical resistance and ease of application. The lower viscosity of Amivion PAM-651 supports its use in both brush and spray application methods across these coating types.

Additional end uses include structural epoxy adhesives for bonding metal, concrete, and composite components in construction and manufacturing; wood treatment primers and sealers for moisture protection; protective coatings for agricultural and construction equipment; and repair compound and putty formulations where ambient cure, good adhesion, and film flexibility are required. Amivion PAM-651 is also evaluated in combination with other Amivion polyamide grades to fine-tune pot life and film properties for specific application requirements.
