Amivion PAM-650-500

Low molecular weight polyamide resin epoxy curing agent (amine value ~500 mgKOH/g) for flexible anticorrosion coatings, marine protective systems, and structural adhesives.

Amivion PAM-650-500 is a low molecular weight polyamide resin epoxy curing agent produced by the condensation of dimer fatty acids with polyethylenepolyamines. With an amine value of approximately 500 mgKOH/g, Amivion PAM-650-500 provides a high density of reactive amine groups per gram of curing agent, enabling efficient cross-linking of bisphenol A and bisphenol F epoxy resins at ambient temperatures. Polyamide curing agents of this type are valued for their combination of good flexibility in the cured film, excellent adhesion to metal, concrete, and wood substrates, compatibility with a wide range of epoxy resins, and resistance to amine blush under humid cure conditions. Amivion PAM-650-500 is suited to protective coatings, marine anticorrosion systems, adhesives, and maintenance painting applications where flexibility, adhesion, and processing ease are primary requirements.

Key Features

  • Flexibility in Cured Epoxy Films: The fatty acid-derived segments in Amivion PAM-650-500 introduce chain flexibility into the cured epoxy network, producing films with improved elongation at break, impact resistance, and resistance to cracking under mechanical deformation compared to rigid amine-cured systems. This flexibility is particularly advantageous in coatings applied to thermally cycling structures or substrates subject to vibration and mechanical stress.
  • Excellent Substrate Adhesion: Amivion PAM-650-500 contributes strong adhesion to a wide variety of substrates including carbon steel, galvanized steel, aluminum, concrete, and wood. Good adhesion is important in both anticorrosion coating systems and structural adhesive applications, and the polyamide chemistry supports adhesion even where complete surface preparation is not achievable.
  • Low Blush Tendency: Compared to unmodified aliphatic amine curing agents, Amivion PAM-650-500 shows reduced tendency for amine blush—surface contamination caused by migration of free amine and subsequent reaction with atmospheric carbon dioxide under humid conditions. This results in better inter-coat adhesion and surface appearance in multi-coat epoxy systems applied under field conditions.
  • Compatible with Epoxy Resins and Reactive Diluents: Amivion PAM-650-500 is compatible with standard liquid bisphenol A and bisphenol F epoxy resins over a broad mixing range, and tolerates reactive diluents used to reduce system viscosity. This broad compatibility supports formulation of a wide range of solvent-borne, high-solids, and solvent-free two-component epoxy coatings and adhesives.
  • Controlled Pot Life: Polyamide curing agents of this type typically provide longer pot life at a given temperature compared to low molecular weight aliphatic amine adducts, giving applicators more working time during mixing, application, and brush or spray operations. The specific pot life of Amivion PAM-650-500 depends on formulation stoichiometry and ambient temperature conditions.

Typical Applications

Amivion PAM-650-500 is used as the curing agent in solvent-borne and high-solids two-component epoxy coatings for anticorrosion protection and maintenance painting. Primary applications include anticorrosion primers and intermediate coats for structural steel, marine vessels, offshore structures, and industrial equipment; maintenance coatings for bridges, pipelines, and storage tanks where flexibility and adhesion to aged or marginally prepared surfaces are required; and epoxy mastic coatings for surface-tolerant maintenance applications. The product’s flexibility and adhesion characteristics make it well suited to demanding anticorrosion coating programs.

Additional applications include flexible structural epoxy adhesives for bonding dissimilar materials subject to differential thermal expansion; protective coatings for concrete and masonry in civil engineering maintenance; wood sealer and primer formulations requiring penetration and adhesion to porous substrates; and general-purpose two-component epoxy putties and repair compounds requiring ambient cure and good chemical resistance. Amivion PAM-650-500 is also evaluated as a component in flexible epoxy floor coatings and waterproofing systems for substrates prone to movement or cracking.
