Low molecular weight, high-amine-value polyamide 650 curing agent (amine value ~500 mgKOH/g) for fast-cure, high-crosslink-density epoxy coatings and adhesives.

Amivion PAM-650-500 is a low molecular weight polyamide resin epoxy curing agent produced by the condensation of dimer fatty acids with polyethylenepolyamines. With an amine value of approximately 500 mgKOH/g, Amivion PAM-650-500 provides a high density of reactive amine groups per gram of curing agent, enabling efficient cross-linking of bisphenol A and bisphenol F epoxy resins at ambient temperatures.

Polyamide curing agents of this type are valued for their combination of good flexibility in the cured film, excellent adhesion to metal, concrete, and wood substrates, compatibility with a wide range of epoxy resins, and resistance to amine blush under humid cure conditions.

Amivion PAM-650-500: Safety & Handling

Amivion PAM-650-500 should be handled in accordance with applicable safety procedures for polyamide and amine-containing epoxy curing agents. The product may cause skin sensitization and eye irritation; direct contact should be avoided. Personal protective equipment including chemical-resistant gloves, safety goggles, and protective clothing should be worn during handling and mixing. Adequate ventilation should be maintained to limit amine vapor exposure during application. Stoichiometry and Formulation Blending Guidance

Because Amivion PAM-650-500 carries a substantially higher amine value than lower-reactivity 650-series grades, formulators must recalculate stoichiometric dosing rather than substituting it phr-for-phr into an existing formulation built around a lower-amine-value polyamide. Under-dosing leaves unreacted epoxy groups and a soft, under-cured film, while over-dosing leaves excess unreacted amine that can bloom to the surface as a greasy film or contribute to water sensitivity in the cured coating.

In practice, Amivion PAM-650-500 is often blended with a lower-amine-value, higher-molecular-weight polyamide such as Amivion PAM-650-200 to fine-tune the balance between fast, high-crosslink-density cure and film flexibility, pot life, and viscosity. This blending approach lets formulators dial in cure speed and film hardness for a specific application without moving to a different curing agent chemistry altogether, and is a common technique in polyamide-cured coating and adhesive formulation.

Application Notes for High-Reactivity Grades

High-amine-value polyamide curing agents such as Amivion PAM-650-500 generate a faster initial cure and higher early hardness development than their lower-amine counterparts, which shortens the recoat and handling window in multi-coat coating systems and speeds demold or return-to-service time in adhesive and repair compound applications. This faster reactivity comes with a shorter pot life once the two components are mixed, so batch sizes and application windows should be planned accordingly, particularly at higher ambient temperatures where exotherm accelerates further.

Because the cured network forms more quickly and with a higher crosslink density than lower-amine-value grades, coatings formulated with Amivion PAM-650-500 tend to reach chemical and water resistance milestones sooner, which is valuable in fast-turnaround maintenance painting and marine drydock schedules. Formulators should still allow the full recommended cure schedule before exposing the coating to immersion or chemical service, since early-stage hardness does not guarantee full cure-dependent chemical resistance.

The higher amine value of Amivion PAM-650-500 also reflects a shorter-chain, more heavily aminated polyamine input such as triethylenetetramine in the condensation reaction, which increases the density of reactive secondary amine and imidazoline groups relative to the dimer fatty acid backbone.
