Addivion DISP 00

Wetting and dispersing additive for stabilizing inorganic pigments in solvent-borne industrial and architectural coating systems.

Addivion DISP 00 is a wetting and dispersing additive based on a salt of unsaturated polyamine amides and low-molecular acidic polyesters, supplied as a solution at approximately 50% non-volatile content in xylene/isobutanol. It delivers effective steric stabilization of pigments and fillers, supporting deflocculation, viscosity reduction, and long-term anti-settling performance. The product is widely used across architectural coatings, industrial coatings, and protective coating systems where stable, well-dispersed pigment pastes are essential.

Addivion DISP 00 Overview

Addivion DISP 00 belongs to the family of polyamide-based wetting and dispersing additives, engineered around a salt of unsaturated polyamine amides and acidic polyesters. This chemistry provides both wetting action, which helps the additive rapidly coat and separate pigment particles during milling, and steric stabilization, which keeps particles apart afterward to prevent flocculation and settling over the storage life of the finished coating.

Supplied as a solution at approximately 50% non-volatile matter in a xylene/isobutanol solvent blend, the product is ready for direct incorporation into the millbase. Beyond its core pigment-stabilizing role, the additive is also valued for its ability to support anti-settling and anti-separation performance in the finished formulation, reducing the need for separate rheology additives in some systems. Because the additive combines wetting and long-term stabilizing action in a single product, formulators can often simplify their additive package relative to using separate wetting agents and rheology modifiers.

Key Features

  • Polyamide salt chemistry: Addivion DISP 00 is built on a salt of unsaturated polyamine amides and low-molecular acidic polyesters, a well-established wetting and dispersing additive chemistry.
  • Steric stabilization for deflocculation: The product causes pigments to deflocculate through steric stabilization, supporting higher gloss and improved color development.
  • Improved optical properties: Coatings formulated with the product show increased gloss, improved color strength, and greater transparency or hiding power depending on the pigment system.
  • Viscosity reduction: The product reduces millbase and finished coating viscosity, supporting easier processing and higher pigment loading.
  • Anti-settling support: Beyond pigment stabilization, the product contributes to anti-settling and anti-separation performance in stored formulations.

Typical Applications

Addivion DISP 00 is primarily used as a wetting and dispersing additive in solvent-borne architectural and industrial coatings, where its steric stabilization mechanism supports stable, high-gloss pigment dispersions across a range of inorganic and organic pigment types. It is also widely applied in protective coating systems that require long-term storage stability and resistance to pigment settling.

Beyond general coatings, the product is valuable in organoclay paste preparation and other formulations where controlled deflocculation is critical to achieving the target rheological profile. For complementary pigment wetting in high-solids or solvent-free systems, formulators often evaluate Addivion DISP 20 alongside this grade.

Polyamide Salt Dispersant Chemistry

Polyamide salt dispersants such as Addivion DISP 00 stabilize pigments through a two-part mechanism: the acidic anchoring groups derived from the low-molecular acidic polyester component adsorb onto the pigment surface, while the polyamine amide segments extend outward into the surrounding medium to create a steric barrier against particle reapproach. This combination is particularly effective for a broad range of inorganic pigments, including titanium dioxide, and also performs well with many organic pigment systems.

Because the product also interacts favorably with clay-based rheology modifiers, it is frequently used in organoclay paste preparation, where its wetting action helps disperse the clay particles evenly before the paste is let down into the final formulation. As with all polyamide-based dispersants, compatibility with the specific binder and pigment system should be confirmed through small-scale trials, since performance can vary meaningfully between different resin polarities. Formulators should also note that the flash point of the xylene/isobutanol carrier solvent is relatively low, so appropriate ventilation and ignition-source controls should be maintained wherever the product is stored, mixed, or applied.

Storage Recommendations

  • Store in the original, tightly sealed container, protected from moisture, heat, and foreign material.
  • Recommended storage temperature: 0-30°C.

Formulation Guidance

When formulating with this dispersing additive, pigment type, surface area, and binder polarity all influence the optimum dosage and resulting millbase viscosity. Formulators are encouraged to run a small dosage matrix across a range of addition levels to identify the point that delivers the best balance of gloss, color strength, and long-term storage stability for the target pigment system. For formulations that also require a complementary surface additive, formulators may wish to evaluate Addivion WET 11 alongside this grade.

Because the product is supplied in a xylene/isobutanol solvent blend, solvent compatibility with the target formulation should be confirmed before scale-up, particularly in systems with restricted aromatic solvent content. As with all dispersing additives, small-scale compatibility and dosage trials are recommended before full-batch formulation.

Addivion DISP 00: Safety & Handling

Addivion DISP 00 should be handled in accordance with standard industrial hygiene practices for coatings additives. Users are advised to review the Safety Data Sheet prior to handling and to implement appropriate personal protective equipment and engineering controls as specified therein. As with all dispersing additives, small-scale compatibility and dosage trials are recommended before full-batch formulation to confirm performance in the target pigment and binder system.
