Addivion SURF 01

Silicone-free polymeric defoamer for waterborne coatings, printing inks, and adhesives, designed for effective foam control at low dosage.

Addivion SURF 01 is a polymer-based, VOC-free and silicone-free defoamer built on a compound of polyether with hydrophobic particles, formulated for aqueous coatings, printing inks, and adhesives. It delivers an optimal defoaming effect at the lowest dosage while remaining stable to acids and alkalis across a broad pH 3-12 range. The product is especially recommended for high-quality architectural coatings and is widely used across latex paints, plasters, waterborne printing inks, and water-based adhesives and sealants.

Addivion SURF 01 Overview

Addivion SURF 01 belongs to the family of polymer-based, silicone-free defoamers, in which a compound of polyether and hydrophobic particles is dispersed to achieve rapid, effective foam control across a broad range of aqueous formulations. Because the product is free of both silicones and mineral oil, it is especially well suited to VOC-free systems, offering an optimal defoaming effect even at the lowest dosage levels.

The product can be added at any time during production, provided sufficiently high shear forces are applied to ensure even distribution. Beyond standard architectural coatings, it is also a highly effective defoamer for waterborne printing inks, overprint varnishes, and dispersion adhesives, with particularly strong performance in polyacrylate-based adhesive systems where foam control during both production and application is essential.

Key Features

  • Silicone-free and VOC-free polyether chemistry: Addivion SURF 01 is built on a compound of polyether with hydrophobic particles, delivering effective foam control without silicone or mineral oil.
  • Optimal effect at the lowest dosage: The product achieves reliable defoaming performance at recommended dosages as low as 0.05% of the total formulation.
  • Broad pH stability: Addivion SURF 01 is stable to acids and alkalis and can be used across a pH range of 3-12.
  • Suitable for medium to high PVC systems: The product is especially recommended for emulsion paints and plasters within a PVC range of 30-85.
  • Effective across multiple waterborne applications: The product performs well in architectural coatings, printing inks, and dispersion adhesives, simplifying additive selection across a formulator’s product range.

Typical Applications

Addivion SURF 01 is primarily used as a defoamer in architectural waterborne coatings, where it is especially recommended for emulsion paints and plasters and delivers reliable foam control at minimal dosage. It is also widely applied in wood and furniture coatings, leather finishes, and protective waterborne coating systems.

Beyond general coatings, the product is a highly effective defoamer for waterborne printing inks and overprint varnishes, and performs particularly well in dispersion adhesives, including polyacrylate-based systems, where it inhibits foaming during both production and application. For complementary pigment wetting and dispersion in waterborne systems, formulators often evaluate Addivion DISP 00 alongside this grade. Because the additive can be dosed into the formulation at essentially any stage of production, it fits readily into existing manufacturing workflows without requiring dedicated equipment or process changes.

Polyether Defoamer Chemistry & VOC-Free Performance

Polyether-based defoamers such as Addivion SURF 01 work by disrupting the stability of foam bubbles through hydrophobic particles dispersed within a polyether carrier, promoting rapid bubble coalescence and rupture without relying on silicone or mineral oil active phases. This chemistry is particularly valued in VOC-free and low-VOC formulations, where silicone-based alternatives can introduce recoating and intercoat adhesion risks that this polyether chemistry avoids.

As with all defoamers, incorporation method matters significantly for performance: the additive can be added at any point during production, but sufficiently high shear forces must be applied to ensure even distribution throughout the formulation. Formulators should note that the product can lead to turbidity and seeding in clear coatings and overprint varnishes, so its effect on optical clarity should always be tested in preliminary trials before use in transparent or clear-coat systems.

The product’s stability across a wide pH 3-12 range also makes it a reliable choice for formulations that undergo pH adjustment during processing, such as certain latex systems and pH-sensitive dispersion adhesives, where defoamer performance must be maintained throughout the full production cycle.

Storage Recommendations

  • Store in the original, tightly sealed container, protected from moisture, heat, and foreign material.
  • Recommended storage temperature: 10-25°C for optimum handling; the product is not frost sensitive.
  • Separation is possible on standing; mix well before use.
  • Protect from direct sunlight during storage and transport.

Documentation & Compliance

Each shipment of the product is supported by standard quality and compliance documentation to help customers manage incoming inspection, formulation approval, and downstream regulatory reporting.

  • Certificate of Analysis (COA): Provided per batch
  • Safety Data Sheet (SDS): Mandatory prior to handling
  • Labels: Prepared in accordance with applicable regulations
  • Industrial and professional use only

Formulation Guidance

When formulating with this defoaming additive, recommended dosage levels vary slightly by application: 0.05-0.5% of the total formulation for architectural coatings and adhesives, and 0.1-0.5% for printing inks and overprint varnishes. These levels serve as a starting point, with the optimal dosage determined through a small series of laboratory trials for the target formulation.

Because the product is silicone-free and mineral-oil-free, it is particularly well suited to VOC-free and low-VOC waterborne formulations where these active phases are restricted or undesirable. For applications requiring a solvent-borne air release additive instead, formulators may wish to evaluate Addivion DEF 06.

Addivion SURF 01: Safety & Handling

Addivion SURF 01 should be handled in accordance with standard industrial hygiene practices for waterborne coatings and adhesive additives. Users are advised to review the Safety Data Sheet prior to handling and to implement appropriate personal protective equipment and engineering controls as specified therein. As with all defoaming additives, small-scale compatibility and dosage trials are recommended before full-batch formulation to confirm performance and to check for any effect on clarity in the target system.
