Polyvion WAD U30

Non-ionic associative polyurethane thickener for waterborne coating and adhesive systems, designed to enhance high-shear viscosity and flow control.

Polyvion WAD U30 is a non-ionic associative polyurethane thickener supplied as an aqueous solution for waterborne coating and adhesive systems. Formulated as a hydrophobically modified polyurethane (HEUR-type) rheology modifier, it builds high-shear viscosity while delivering a Newtonian-like flow profile, helping formulators achieve balanced flow, leveling, and film appearance without the drag or spatter associated with some conventional thickeners. The product is widely used across architectural, industrial, and wood coating formulations where consistent application viscosity and clean flow-out are required.

Polyvion WAD U30 Overview

Polyvion WAD U30 belongs to the family of HEUR-type associative thickeners, in which hydrophobic end groups on a polyurethane backbone interact with latex particles and surfactant micelles in the aqueous phase to build viscosity. Unlike low-shear associative grades, the product is engineered to deliver a predominantly Newtonian rheology profile, meaning viscosity remains relatively stable across the shear range experienced during brushing, rolling, and spraying. This behavior supports excellent flow and leveling, reduced roller spatter, and a smoother film appearance compared with formulations thickened by traditional cellulosic or alkali-swellable systems.

The product is supplied ready to use as an aqueous solution and is designed for straightforward post-addition into finished waterborne formulations. Because the thickening mechanism is physical rather than ionic, performance is generally less sensitive to formulation pH and electrolyte content than with alkali-swellable emulsion thickeners, which helps simplify letdown and quality control across production batches.

Key Features

  • High-shear viscosity control: Polyvion WAD U30 is designed to increase high-shear viscosity, supporting consistent film build and application feel during brush, roller, and spray application.
  • Newtonian-type flow behavior: The product supports balanced flow and leveling, helping reduce brush marks, roller stipple, and orange peel in the finished film.
  • Low-odor, waterborne system: Formulated as a low-odor aqueous product, it is well suited to interior architectural and professional applications where odor control matters.
  • Broad formulation compatibility: Suitable for a wide range of waterborne binder systems, including acrylic, styrene-acrylic, and polyurethane dispersions, making it a versatile building block across multiple coating platforms.
  • Organotin-free and APEO-free formulation: The product is formulated without organotin catalysts or APEO-containing surfactants*, supporting cleaner-label systems intended for professional and industrial use.

Typical Applications

Polyvion WAD U30 is primarily used to build and stabilize the high-shear viscosity of waterborne industrial and architectural coatings, where it supports even film build during spray and roller application while minimizing spatter and drag. Its Newtonian-type rheology profile makes it particularly useful in systems where clean flow, leveling, and gloss retention are priorities, helping formulators avoid the heavy, stringy feel sometimes associated with high-dosage cellulosic thickeners.

Beyond industrial coatings, Polyvion WAD U30 is also applied in waterborne wood coatings, adhesives and sealants, and pigmented or clear waterborne systems that require both good flow-out and dependable viscosity control at application shear rates. It is frequently evaluated alongside low-shear associative thickeners, such as Polyvion WAD U90, to build a fully balanced rheology profile across the full shear range.

Rheological Performance

Polyvion WAD U30 is designed to complement, rather than replace, low-shear associative thickeners in a fully engineered rheology package. While low-shear grades govern sag resistance and in-can body, high-shear Newtonian-type thickeners like this one govern brushability, roller pick-up and release, and final film leveling. Balancing both mechanisms allows formulators to fine-tune the complete viscosity profile of a coating from can to applied film.

Because Polyvion WAD U30 produces a relatively flat viscosity curve across the shear range, coatings formulated with it tend to show reduced spatter during roller application and improved flow-out immediately after application, before the film sets. Dosage, order of addition, and shear during letdown can all influence the final rheological result, so bench-scale trials are recommended before scale-up to production volumes.

Storage Recommendations

  • Store in a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
  • Recommended storage temperature range: 5-35°C; protect from freezing.
  • Keep containers tightly closed when not in use to prevent evaporation and contamination.
  • Shelf life: To be confirmed based on the final specification sheet.

Documentation & Compliance

Each shipment of the product is supported by standard quality and compliance documentation to help customers manage incoming inspection, formulation approval, and downstream regulatory reporting.

  • Certificate of Analysis (COA): Provided per batch
  • Safety Data Sheet (SDS): Available upon request
  • Labels: Prepared in accordance with destination regulations
  • Industrial use only

Formulation Guidance

As with any associative thickener, the final rheological result delivered by the product depends on the surrounding formulation, including binder chemistry, surfactant package, pigment volume concentration, and the shear history applied during letdown. Formulators are encouraged to run a small dosage ladder, typically starting from a low addition level and increasing incrementally, to identify the point at which target high-shear viscosity and flow-out are achieved without compromising leveling.

Because the product is non-ionic, it is generally compatible with a broad range of anionic and non-ionic surfactants and dispersants used in waterborne coatings. However, as with all rheology modifiers, compatibility should be confirmed through bench trials whenever a new binder, colorant, or additive package is introduced into an existing formulation.

Packaging & Logistics

  • Packaging: Standard industrial packaging
  • MOQ: Subject to packaging configuration
  • Lead time: Indicative lead time, to be confirmed upon order acceptance
  • Incoterms: Quoted case by case

Polyvion WAD U30: Safety & Handling

Polyvion WAD U30 should be handled in accordance with standard industrial hygiene practices for aqueous polyurethane additives. Users are advised to review the Safety Data Sheet prior to handling and to implement appropriate personal protective equipment and engineering controls as specified therein. As with all rheology additives, small-scale compatibility and dosage trials are recommended before full-batch formulation to confirm performance in the target system.
